——A Brief Introduction to Mr. Li Yuandong’s Calligraphy Art
Western Chinese
Mr. Li Yuandong is one of the famous contemporary masters I have always paid attention to. There are two reasons for paying attention to him: one is the direction and pattern he represents in contemporary Weibei innovation; the other is his achievements and height in big-brand creation.
The stele was flourished since the Qing Dynasty and was vigorously promoted by Kang Youwei and others. It has flourished for more than a hundred years and has emerged in many famous masters. From Zhao Zhiqian to Sha Menghai, from Zhang Yuzhao to Li Shutong, there are diverse styles and unique styles. It has become a major calligraphy art school that is incompatible with calligraphy, which also shows that stele studies have inexhaustible artistic resources. However, since the late century, epigraphy has seemed to be silent, with few great masters and new styles being released. In the past forty years, the calligraphy name is Revival. However, compared with the enthusiasm of calligraphy and the achievements made in seal and clerical studies, there is not much new inspiration in stele studies, and there is less creation in copying. Only Mr. Sun Boxiang can be regarded as the one who has established himself in the world. The most accomplished calligrapher of its successor is not LiMr. Far East belongs to him.
Mr. Li Yuandong inherited his teacher and used “Shiping Gong” and “Zhang Menglong” as the basis, and used the clumsy and thick square brush as the style tone to express a melancholy charm. This is a distance from the Weibei masters since the Qing Dynasty, such as Zhang Yuzhao, Zhao Zhiqian, Wu Changshuo, Kang Youwei and others. But Li Yuandong showed his own characteristics on the basis of his master. There are mainly three aspects:
First, Li Yuandong’s approach is not limited to “Zhang Menglong” and “Shiping Gong”. It is not difficult to see that he has also practiced many Northern Wei tombstones and calligraphy of scriptures. The diversity of learning makes his brushwork richer. The use of the pen is based on the square pen and some elements of the round pen are added. Reduce the severity of the pen on the side and increase the harmony of the pen on the center, making the lines in his pen heavier and richer tension and connotation. Although this is also reflected in Sun Bolao’s writing, Li Yuandong is obviously more conscious, bolder, and more effective.

I don’t know the true face of Mount Lu, but I only know that I am in this mountain.
——The words come from Su Shi’s “Inscription on the West Lin Wall”, which Xi Jinping quoted in articles such as “Escape from Poverty, The Light of Eastern Fujian – A Brief Thought on Cultural Construction in Eastern Fujian”
Second, Li Yuandong’s Wei stele is unconventional, lively and lively, with no changes, showing a clear tendency to be in running script. The aesthetics of contemporary calligraphy are influenced by many aspects, showing a trend of breaking traditional barriers and integrating various styles into reference. For example, the cursive transformation of seal script and clerical scripts, etc. The Wei steles in history are for practical needs and are all regular script. How to make this style of calligraphy also integrate with other styles such as running scripts is an important topic facing contemporary calligraphers. Looking at the contemporary calligraphy world, many people have made useful explorations in this regard, and Li Yuandong is one of them who is very successful. It is worthy of praise that Far East can accurately grasp direction and measurement with its profound skills and keen insight. Therefore, although his Wei stele has a strong sense of cursive style, it makes people feel just right and will never lose the characteristics of Wei stele.
Third, the Weibei calligraphy in the Far East has a very distinctive personality. This fully reflects the artistic concept of Far East writing about the heart with calligraphy. Although the Far East has profound skills, his calligraphy creation does not have the twists and pretentiousness of deliberately expressing his skills, but a kind of freedom to express his mind and hands, forget about both things and oneself. Everything is like flowing clouds and flowing water, and it will naturally be natural. This is a very high state.
Mr. Xuyu proposed the concept of “Jin Kai” a few years ago. What is Jin Kai? Of course, everyone will have different understandings. But I think that using regular script to promote personality and subjective spirit should undoubtedly be the main meaning of regular script. I think Mr. Li Yuandong’s Weibei calligraphy can be said to be a style of Jin Kai!
Since the revival of calligraphy, cursive script has achieved great achievements, with many famous artists and diverse styles. Especially the cursive script, known as the “crown pearl of calligraphy art”, are many outstanding famous artists. There are two examples of cursive script: one way is to take Zhang Xu as the priest, use the pen to lift and press, and open and close; one way is to take Huaisu as the teacher, and pave it purely with lines, and the center is dominant. Huaisu has many criticisms in history and theory, which is called “different and savvy”. However, Zhang Xu rarely criticized him along the way. What is a bit regrettable is that most people who write big scripts in contemporary times are the patriarch Huaisu, while fewer people who follow Zhang Xu are, because Zhang Xu is more difficult along the way. Mr. Li Yuandong’s cursive script belongs to Zhang Xu’s journey, and he is composed of Sun Guoting, Huang Tingjian, and Wang Duo. He sometimes uses square brushes of Wei steles, so his cursive script is very rich. Looking at his works, they are full of unrestrained spirit of Dionysia, but they are meticulous in lifting and pressing the pen and turning them. Every stroke is in place, and there is no vagueness. Mr. Liu Zhengcheng said that the cursive script in the Far East was between Wang Duo and Yu Youren. This evaluation makes sense. It can be said that his cursive calligraphy is as strong as Wang Duo, and his pen is as steady and solid as Yu Ren.

Weibei and Dacao are originally two completely different styles of calligraphy. It is conceivable to combine the two. But Mr. Far East advanced to the point of difficulty and successfully combined the two, and his style was very unified. Its Wei stele has obvious grass-like characteristics, lively and lively; while its large grass is made of pens that are solemn and vigorous, like painting sand in the cone, and has a strong Wei stele interest. The two are so perfect and natural, I want to be with the Far EastCharacter related. Truthfulness, simplicity, generousness and grandness are the two prominent characteristics of Far Eastern personality. In his works, it is expressed as a unique personality style that is both simple, thick, bold and elegant.
Mr. Li Yuandong is by no means a craftsman calligrapher who can only write (although there are many such calligraphers at present). He has a very deep traditional cultural foundation. Far East sent me his ancient poem “ask for advice”, and I was very surprised after reading it. His poems not only have lofty ideas and fresh styles, but also have very strict rhythms and very standardized rhymes. What is particularly commendable is that the poems are elegant and novel in their lyrics and sentences, and they are also very appropriate and precise in their use of allusions. They are said to be the best in contemporary books. For well-known reasons, people of the age of Li Yuandong have received less traditional education. Many famous calligraphers, even calligraphers who are well-known for their academics, show their timidity when writing ancient poems. And being able to achieve such achievements in the Far East must be the result of hard work and self-study. I once said: Chinese characters and traditional culture are the two cornerstones of calligraphy art, and if a calligrapher is missing, he will not be a qualified calligrapher. We are delighted to see that Mr. Li Yuandong has reached a good level in both aspects. Appreciating his calligraphy and evaluating his poems can’t help but be amazed by the contemporary calligraphy world that has reached such a height!
Mr. Li Yuandong is not only an outstanding calligrapher, but also an excellent calligraphy group Komiks weaver. He has been in charge of the Guangdong Calligraphy Court for many years and has initiated and organized many large-scale calligraphy activities with wide influence across the country, which has received unanimous praise from the national calligraphy community. At the same time, he has repeatedly invited contemporary famous artists to Guangdong to give lectures and preach, bringing the latest calligraphy information, academic dynamics and aesthetic concepts to Guangdong, benefiting Guangdong authors a lot, thus promoting the cultivation of Guangdong’s calligraphy talents and the development of calligraphy career. At the same time, Far East is also enthusiastic about public welfare and actively participates in and promotes the cause of calligraphy serving the society. Using calligraphy as a medium to make good friends, Guangdong’s calligraphy charity has made it popular, thus winning widespread respect from society.
Liu Xizai’s “Book Summary” says: “High rhymes and deep affection, strong and noble spirit, and one cannot be written in a book without any lack.” He also said: “The books of wise men are warm and mellow, the books of heroes are calm and determined, the books of dissatisfied scholars are successful, and the books of talented men are beautiful.” The books of Far East are both talented and noble and noble, and they are exquisite and noble. With its unique personality, it stands out in the contemporary book forest!
