In the 1980s, Pacific Audio and Video Company set the first precedent for “cart-cart stars”. Shen Xiaocen, Cheng Lin, Zhu Xiaolin, and “Tang Biaoan Li” duet became early mainland pop singers and ushered in a huge explosion of popularity.

In the 1990s, the “star-making project” and the “signing system” were fully launched. Mao Ning, Yang Yuying, Chen Ming, Gan Ping, Li Chunbo, bald Li Jin… These names shine in the 1980s and 1990s. They are the first generation of stars in the contemporary pop music scene in mainland China, and they are deeply imprinted by “Made in Guangdong”.

【Origin: Star Making Starts with Pop Music】

Liu Zhiwen, who was formerly the deputy general manager of Pacific Audio and Video, said: “Star Making is Cinema started with pop music.” Since the 1980s, Pacific Audio and Video Company (hereinafter referred to as “Pacific”) began to consciously discover and cultivate pop singers. Liu Zhiwen, known as “Boss”, was an important driving force for this early star-making movement. At that time, Liu Zhiwen launched a “star-making combination punch”: filming music videos, holding a national tour, hosting the “Skylark Award” award ceremony, and jointly building momentum for singers with major media… These propaganda methods that seem ordinary nowadays were unprecedented at the time.

·The Skylark Award became a grand event in the city

In the 1980s, the concept of “MTV” was not yet available in the mainland, and Liu Zhiwen had begun to promote singers through video tapes. Every year on the eve of National Day, audio and video merchants from all over the country will go to Guangzhou to purchase the latest and most trendy audio and video products at the National Audio and Video Product Ordering Conference. The earliest music videos were specially made for ordering Babaylan goods. At this time, the Pacific was the leader, and other companies could only provide auditions at most, but Komiks‘s stalls in the Pacific can not only listen, but also music videos to watch – audio and colorful, which immediately caught the attention of audio-visual merchants. As cassettes produced by Pacific are popular across the country, the singer’s figures have also “occupated” audio and video stores of all sizes across the country through music videos. At that time, Pacific created his first solo album in the mainland for Taiwanese singer Fei Xiang. One of the songs “Flying Youth” was sung by Fei Xiang and mainland singers Cheng Fangyuan, Dong Li, and Tang Biao. The MV was also filmed in Beijing Temple of Heaven, Guangzhou Wuyang Statue, Shanghai Bund, Taipei Yuanshan Hotel and other city landmarks.

To make singers truly enter the hearts of the public, the only image is far from enough. Therefore, Liu Zhiwen presided over the establishment of the Pacific Art Troupe, bringing singers and musicians under the Pacific together to hold a national tour, and the response was extremely popular. Liu Zhiwen recalled: “We often perform two shows a day, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. At the end of the performance, the audience stood up to applaud us.” The singers created by Pacific packaging are always the most popular. Nowadays, many well-known singers have also been the Pacific Art Troupe.Na Ying is one of the members of the company.

Since 1981, Pacific has launched the “Skylark Award” to commend singers with good sales and social benefits. Each winning singer can receive a prize of 1,000 yuan. Liu Zhiwen recalled that he wanted to run for the Skylark Award, and the sales of 2 million boxes were just the “starting price”, which shows the prosperity of the pop music market at that time. The Skylark Award was originally just a small commendation meeting within Pacific Audio and Video, but because of the huge influence of the Pacific, the Skylark Award has received attention from all parties from the beginning. At the first Skylark Award, Liang Lingguang, then the governor of Guangdong, personally presented the award, and Ren Zhongyi, then secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, also sent a congratulatory letter to Pacific Ocean. Afterwards, the Skylark Award became larger and larger, and the venue was moved from the Oriental Hotel to the gymnasium, and the form also evolved into a large-scale awards ceremony. Liu Zhiwen said: “It is really not easy for an award ceremony hosted by an audio-visual company to have such influence.”

Guangdong media helped the rise of pop singers to create stars, and Guangdong media made an indelible contribution. Music people who have experienced that time say that Guangdong media at that time were eagerly paying attention to this rising star. Several Skylark Awards have been broadcasted by Guangdong TV, greatly enhancing the popularity and influence of this award ceremony. There is another story between the Yangcheng Evening News and the Skylark Award: In 1985, the fifth anniversary of the re-issue of the Yangcheng Evening News, Yangwan and the Pacific jointly organized the fourth Skylark Award. Liu Zhiwen recalled that the arrangement of this Skylark Award was very “fashionable”: the event started in the afternoon, and the press conference and buffet banquet were held at the China Hotel, and then the award ceremony was held at the Zhongshan Memorial Hall.

Liu Zhiwen had a deep connection with the Yangcheng Evening News. He recalled: “The evening party, flower fields and other pages of the Yangcheng Evening News were at least three or four articles every month to introduce singers and cartridges from the Pacific.” He even laughed and said that he was a “no-staff reporter” of the Yangcheng Evening News, and sometimes he would write his own articles, “The night shift editors at that time knew me.” In the 1980s, Guangdong TV launched a fixed program “Voice of the Pacific” every Saturday to promote singers and records under Pacific Audio and Video. The famous local TV variety show “The Legend of the Reds” is also the cradle of singers. Lv Nianzu, Mao Ning, Yang Yuying, Tang Biaoan and Li and other singers have appeared on the stage of “The Legend of the Reds””Play songs”. As a result, this group of young pop singers gradually entered thousands of households and everyone’s hearts.

Liu Zhiwen’s most proud “work” is Tang Biaoan and Li, the duet group. In the early 1980s, students from Xinghai Conservatory of Music Tang Biao and An Li formed a duet partner, and were well-known in Guangdong, and Liu Zhiwen liked them. Subsequently, Tang Biao and An Li recorded in the Pacific and released albums such as “Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter”, “In the Rain”, and “Tomorrow Will Be Better”. With the strong boost from Guangdong media, Tang Biaoan and Li, who are “Made in Guangdong”, became the “third generation of male and female duet group” after Zhang Zhenfu, Geng Lianfeng and Wang Jieshi.

[Spread: The era of signing singers is coming]

In the 1990s, Guangdong musicians learned from the practices of Hong Kong, Taiwan and abroad and took the lead in establishing a record company planning department and producer system in the mainland: the record company signed contracts with the singers, and the producers tailored the songs for the singers, carried out the positioning of planning and publicity, and then launched the market after a series of careful packaging. This commercial and market-oriented operation that conforms to the world trend has made the development of Guangdong’s pop music scene flourish.

·Producer replaces music editor

In June 1992, Zhongsing Guangzhou Branch established the first record company planning department in the mainland, with Chen Xiaoqi as the director of the planning department. “Planning” is completely imported. Chen Xiaoqi smiled and said, “When I first established a department, I didn’t know what ‘planning’ was.” At this time, the producer replaced the old-style music editor Cinema and became the helmsman of pop music products. The label’s publicity direction also changed from packaging songs to packaging singers.

The earliest singers Chen Xiaoqi signed were Gan Ping, Li Chunbo, Chen Ming and Zhang Mengmeng. In view of their different characteristics, Chen Xiaoqi plans different market positioning for them.: “Gan Ping has a kind of purity that is ignorant of the world, and her singing style is also a gentle route. We position her as the younger sister next door; Chen Ming sings in the karaoke hall, and her voice has a little vicissitudes, so she is created as a mature woman.”

In addition to being responsible for the overall packaging and music production of the singer, the producer also has the right to allocate funds, and also bears the corresponding production risk responsibilities. When Chen Xiaoqi was the director of the planning department, he slapped the table at the distribution department for Li Chunbo: in 1993, the unknown Northeast singer Li Chunbo took his own “Xiaofang” to major record companies in Guangdong, but he encountered walls everywhere. During the twists and turns, Li Chunbo contacted Li Guangping and Chen Xiaoqi from the China Singing Planning Department, and they were immediately moved by this simple and moving song. Chen Xiaoqi recalled: “As soon as I heard it, I thought this song was very unique, so I decided to sign a contract with Li Chunbo in the form of sharing.” However, the distribution department was unwilling to take on this job. “They all think that the style is too rustic, and Babaylan and all of them are original songs, so they will definitely not be able to sell.” Chen Xiaoqi waved his hand and said, “If you lose money, our planning department will be responsible!” Afterwards, the sales volume of the album “Xiaofang” exceeded 1 million in half a year, setting off a wave of “Xiaofang fever” across the country. Li Chunbo became famous in one shot, and 1993 is also known as “Xiaofang Nian” and “Li Chunbo Nian”.

·Star-making Fire spread to the whole country

In the early 1990s, the mass cultural market that had been barren for many years was hungry, and the pop music industry was a blue ocean. Chen Xiaoqi recalled that it was almost no difficulty to launch a newcomer at that time: “Radio stations everywhere will take the initiative to contact us and let us take the show.” Pop singers have become popular celebrities in the streets and alleys. They held concerts and signing parties in various places, and were as popular as the current traffic stars. There were so many fans that even squeezed the door of the venue. In 1993, the smug Chen Cinema Xiaoqi brought the four singers Gan Ping, Li Chunbo, Chen Ming and Zhang Mengmeng to the north to hold a promotion meeting for the singers of the China-Singing Guangzhou Company in Beijing and Shanghai. At the end of May, Chen Xiaoqi and his group arrived in Shanghai first. Unexpectedly, this shot was silenced: the promotion meeting was not popular, and the Shanghai media responded quite coldly. Chen XiaoQi gritted his teeth and continued to walk north. Beijing’s response was very different from Shanghai.

25 years have passed, and Chen Xiaoqi still remembers the scene of that day. The promotion meeting was held at the Poly Theater in Beijing. The electric fan of the theater happened to break down that day, and it was very hot. The enthusiasm of the media is no less than the temperature that day. A total of 70 or 80 media outlets attended the interview, including important media such as People’s Daily and Guangming Daily. At the promotion meeting, Chen Xiaoqi introduced the work of the China Singing Planning Department and its singers, which aroused great interest from the media. “They asked a lot of questions, such as how to choose a singer, how to organize works, etc. There were also many people asking what the ‘planning department’ was, and no one knew what it was.” Chen Xiaoqi said Cinema, and the next day, the coverage of this promotion conference was covered.

At that time, the four major record companies in Guangdong were all leading the way. After Chen Xiaoqi was transferred to the deputy general manager and editor-in-chief of Pacific Audio and Video Company in 1993, he signed Gan Ping, Zhang Mengmeng, bald Li Jin and others into the Pacific, and Huofeng, Liao Buwei and others also joined the Pacific; Zhongsing Guangzhou Branch includes singers such as Li Chunbo, Chen Ming, and Fang Fang; White Swan Record Company signed singers such as Gao Linsheng, Liu Xiaoyu, and Zhu Hanfang; New Era Record Company discovered Mao Ning, Yang Yuying, and Lin Yilun. The fire of “star-making” spread from south to north and reached its peak in 1994: Mao Ning, Yang Yuying, Li Chunbo, Gan Ping, Chen Ming, etc. in the south, Chen Lin, Xie Dong, Sun Yue, etc., the first generation of Chinese pop music stars – the “94 New Generation” was born.

Gan Ping: I almost didn’t sign the Chinese singer when I put Chen Xiaoqi on the pigeon. In the early 1990s, Chen Xiaoqi tailored “Big Brother, how are you?” for Gan PingShe was popular all over the country after waiting for the album. What everyone doesn’t know is that Gan Ping almost missed a rare opportunity to sign a contract back then. Chen Xiaoqi recalled that at that time, a vice president of the Guangzhou Branch of Zhongsing listened to Gan Ping’s singing at a singing competition. He thought it was very good, so he gave Chen Xiaoqi a task: to get in touch with this girl and find out if it is worth signing a contract. However, when Komiks, when they first made an appointment, Chen Xiaoqi was released by Gan Ping. He waited for two or three hours, but there was no sign of Gan Ping at all. Chen Xiaoqi was very angry at the time. Later, under the strong arrangement of the vice president, the two finally met, and Gan Ping successfully became a contracted singer of the Guangzhou Branch of China Singer. As for the mystery of “Gan Ping dared to let Chen Xiaoqi go” it was not solved until more than 20 years later: It turned out that BabaylanGan Ping thought these people were liars at the time… Chen Ming: He became the champion and joined the China Singing Guangzhou Company

In 1990, Chen Ming gave up his iron job as a state-owned enterprise and went south to Shenzhen to become a bar singer. In 1992, she participated in the first Guangdong Dance Hall Singer Competition and became the champion. Chen Xiaoqi was a judge in the finals of this competition. He recalled that Chen Komiks Ming was the last one in the Shenzhen team, but after listening to her singing, Chen Xiaoqi and another judge, the famous composer Lanzhai, gave her high scores: “This girl has a good singing feeling and skills.” Later, Chen Xiaoqi went to Shenzhen to sign a contract, and Chen Ming became a signing singer for the Guangzhou Company of China Singing. Chen Ming is a “desperate three-girl”. He can sing for eight hours every time he enters the recording studio. She said: “There was no current technology at that time. You had to sing the whole paragraph. If there was a place that was not good, you had to do it again. In the afternoon, you would like to record it until three or four in the morning the next day.”  

Huang Qishan: Be admitted to the “Butong 100” and stepped onto the top stage

Since 1986, Chongqing girl Huang Qishan began to sing in Chongqing, Guiyang, Haikou and other places. In 1991, she rushed from Haikou to Guangzhou with the goal of joining the most famous karaoke bar in China, “Butong 100”. What makes Huang Qishan puzzled until now is that she took the exam three times before passing the exam: “Teacher Peter Chen (a famous Taiwanese musician), Xin Air Band and Na Ying all rushed into the office of the boss of the ‘Butong 100’ and talked to him: I don’t want such a good singer? Later, when I was about to go home, I suddenly received a call, and a dull voice came from the opposite side: Is it Huang Xiaoxia (Huang Qishan’s real name)? I have packed up the ‘Butong 100’.” Although the performance of the ‘Butong 100’ was only half a year, it had a great impact on Huang Qishan. She recalled: “At that time, the base camp for original music was in Guangzhou, ‘Butong 100’It is the top performance venue in the mainland.
