[Origin: Starmaking starts with pop music]

Liu Zhiwen, who was once the deputy general manager of Pacific Audio and Video, said: “Starmaking starts with pop music.” Since the 1980s, Pacific Audio and Video (hereinafter referred to as “Pacific”) began to consciously discover and cultivate pop singers. Liu Zhiwen, known as “Boss”, was an important driving force for this early starmaking movement. As the cassette produced by Pacific was popular across the country, the singer’s figure also “occupies” large and small audio-visual stores across the country through music videos. At that time, Pacific created his first solo album in the mainland for Taiwanese singer Fei Xiang. One of the songs “Flying Youth” was sung by Fei Xiang and mainland singers Cheng Fangyuan, Dong Li, and Tang Biao. The MV was also filmed in many city landmarks such as the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, the Wuyang Statue in Guangzhou, the Bund in Shanghai, and the Yuanshan Hotel in Taipei.

Fei Xiang’s first album in the mainland was launched by Pacific Audio and Video Company. To make singers truly enter the hearts of the public, the only image is far from enough. Therefore, Liu Zhiwen hosted the establishment of the Pacific Art Troupe and brought singers and musicians under the Pacific together to hold a national tour, and the response was extremely popular. Liu Zhiwen recalled: “We often perform two shows a day, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. At the end of the performance, the audience stood up and applauded us. “Singers created by Pacific packaging are always popular. Nowadays, many well-known singers were also members of the Pacific Art Troupe, and Na Ying is one of them.

Since 1981, Pacific started the “Skylark Award” to commend singers with good sales and good social benefits. Each winning singer can receive a prize of 1,000 yuan. Liu Zhiwen recalled that if he wanted to run for the Skylark Award, the sales of 2 million boxes was just the “starting price”, which shows the prosperity of the pop music market at that time. The Skylark Award was just Pacific Video at the beginningA small commendation meeting within the company, but because of the huge influence of the Pacific, the Skylark Award has been valued by all parties from the beginning. At the first Cinema Skylark Award, Liang Lingguang, then the governor of Guangdong, personally presented the Komiks award, and Ren Zhongyi, then secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, also sent a congratulatory letter to Pacific Ocean. Afterwards, the Skylark Award became larger and larger, and the venue was moved from the Oriental Hotel to the gymnasium, and the form also evolved into a large-scale awards ceremony. Liu Zhiwen said: “It is really not easy for an award ceremony hosted by an audio-visual company to have such influence.”

There is another story between the Yangcheng Evening News and the Skylark Award: In 1985, the fifth anniversary of the re-issue of the Yangcheng Evening News, Yangwan and the Pacific jointly organized the fourth Skylark Award. Liu Zhiwen recalled that the arrangement of this Skylark Award was very “fashionable”: the event started in the afternoon, and first held a press conference and a buffet banquet at the China Hotel, and then moved to the Zhongshan Memorial Hall to hold an award ceremony.

Liu Zhiwen had a deep connection with the Yangcheng Evening News. He recalled: “The evening party, flower fields and other pages of the Yangcheng Evening News were at least three or four articles every month to introduce singers and cartridges from the Pacific.” He even laughed and said that he was a “no-staff reporter” of the Yangcheng Evening News, and sometimes he would write his own articles, “The night shift editors at that time knew me.” In the 1980s, Guangdong TV launched a fixed program “Voice of the Pacific” every Saturday to promote singers and records under Pacific Audio and Video. The famous local TV variety show “The Legend of Purples and Reds” is also the cradle of singers. Singers such as Lu Nianzu, Mao Ning, Yang Yuying, Tang Biaoan and Li all appeared on the stage of “Playing Songs”. As a result, this group of young pop singers gradually entered thousands of households and everyone’s hearts.

Liu Zhiwen’s most proud “work” is the duet group Tang Biaoan and Li. In the early 1980s, students from Xinghai Conservatory of Music Tang Biao and An Li formed a duet partner, and were well-known in Guangdong, and Liu Zhiwen liked them. Subsequently, Tang Biao and An Li recorded and released the “KomiksSpring, Summer, Autumn and Winter”, “In the Rain”, “KomiksTomorrow Will Be Better”. With the strong boost from Guangdong media, Tang Biaoan and Li, who are “Made in Guangdong”, became the “third generation of male and female duet group” after Zhang Zhenfu, Geng Lianfeng and Wang Jieshi.

In June 1992, Zhongsing Guangzhou Branch established the first record company planning department in the mainland, with Chen Xiaoqi as the director of the planning department. “Planning” is completely imported. Chen Xiaoqi smiled and said: “When I first established a department, I didn’t know what ‘planning’ was.” At this time, the producer replaced the old-style music editor and became the helmsman of pop music products. The promotional direction of the record company also changed from packaging songs to packaging singers.

The earliest singers Chen Xiaoqi signed were Gan Ping, Li Chunbo, Chen Ming and Zhang Mengmeng. In the early 1990s, the mass cultural market that had been barren for many years was in a hurry, and the pop music industry was a blue ocean. Chen Xiaoqi recalled that it was almost no difficulty to launch a newcomer at that time: “Radio stations everywhere will take the initiative to contact us and let us go on the show. “Pop singers have become popular celebrities in the streets and alleys. They held concerts and signing meetings in various places. They were as popular as the current traffic stars. There were so many fans that even squeezed the door of the venue.

In 1993, the ambitious Chen Xiaoqi brought Gan Ping, Li Chunbo, Chen Ming and Zhang Mengmeng to the north to hold a promotion meeting for singers from the Chinese singers in Beijing and Shanghai. At the end of May, Chen Xiaoqi and his group arrived in Shanghai first. Unexpectedly, this shot was silenced: the promotion meeting was not popular, and the Shanghai media responded quite coldly. Chen Xiaoqi gritted his teeth and continued to walk north. The response in Beijing was very different from that in Shanghai.

25 years have passed, and Chen Xiaoqi still remembers the scene that day. The promotion meeting was held at the Poly Theater in Beijing.
